Plastics Reimagined - Plastic Recycling Machine
Plastics Reimagined - Plastic Recycling Machine
In 2021, I had the idea of making a machine that turned locally unrecyclable plastics (being from Alaska where we only recycle number 1's and 2's) into 3D printing filament and incorporating it into my school's defunded STEM program. I did some research and using some opensource documentation, designed a machine that shredded and then extruded the plastic using Onshape. In this process I designed a clutch with a v-belt pulley system that allowed the shredder and extruder portions of the machine to use the same motor, reducing project costs by 45%. I then fabricated the machine using everything from MIG welding, manual mill, lathe, water-jet, and CNC mill.
